The Largest Tobacco Tax Hike in History: Federal Tobacco Tax Triples

You've probably noticed by now that you're paying much more for cigarettes today than you were a couple days ago. The price of a pack of cigarettes here in Los Angeles jumped to over $6 per pack. Some are feeling it more than others, however. The current price of a pack of cigarettes in New York is over $10! At that rate, a carton would cost over $100! The news is even worse for those who smoke cigars, or roll their own cigarettes:

The cost of lighting up in the United States skyrocketed Wednesday under a federal tax hike on tobacco to fund new health care coverage to uninsured children.
The federal tax on a pack of cigarettes more than tripled to more than one dollar, from 39 cents, the Treasury Department said. For a 10-pack carton, the tax leapt to 10.06 dollars from 3.90 dollars.
Taxes on all other tobacco products increased. Some of the largest hikes were on roll-your-own tobacco, raised to 24.78 dollars per pound from 1.09 dollars, and small cigars, to 50.33 dollars per 1,000 from 1.82 dollars.

Congressmen Spotted Smoking Electronic Cigarettes

It looks as though a handful of Congressmen have taken up electronic cigarettes! Does anyone else get the feeling they opted for the inLife "Elite" pack? ;)

The battery-operated device, known as an electronic cigarette, looks like a normal cigarette, but contains no tobacco and instead of smoke emits a nicotine vapor when the user inhales. Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) and Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) have all been spotted using the device on Capitol Hill.

That's about as close to bipartisanship as Congress can get, so enjoy it while it lasts! What's more, here's a beaming endorsement of electronic cigarettes by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL):

“These e-cigarettes are smokeless and do not produce carcinogens. The nicotine in e-cigarettes is controlled in a capsule that can help in smoking cessation by allowing the user to reduce gradually the nicotine level, hopefully to zero.”

Stearns has sent electronic cigarettes to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and President Obama to help them quit smoking. He’s been seen using the device in the Speaker’s Lobby, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) banned smoking two years ago.

That's right people: President Obama owns an electronic cigarette. How cool is that?

Stick it to Big Tobacco!

Big Tobacco: they're selling you cancer. They're selling you emphysema. They're selling you heart and respiratory disease. They're selling you your own death. Not only are you buying it, with a smile on your face, but you probably can't go more than a few hours without it.

How long have you been smoking? Before I found out about electronic cigarettes, I smoked at least a pack a day (much more if I were drinking) for 12+ years. Yes, I worried about my health. Well, as much as a 25 year old really can. What really did it for me, though, was realizing that I was financially supporting Big Tobacco, an industry that kills millions every year, through my habit. Really, it seems like smoking is going to be banned almost everywhere pretty soon. There's no need to give up your freedom to smoke.
